Welcome Back to School

Reed Raccoons

Dear Reed School Families,

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year. This is going to be an exciting year filled with lots of new learning opportunities and activities. The Reed Staff has been busy this summer attending and receiving training in Cognitively Guided Instruction, Stanford Online Math Instruction, and Bully Prevention. This will be year two of our school wide implementation of the Kimochi social emotional program. Students, staff, teachers and families will work together to use the 7 Keys to Communication to build and strengthen our safe and friendly school community. Please take a moment to review these skills with your child.

  1. Before you speak, make eye contact and call someone by name

  2. Use a talking tone of voice

  3. Use a talking face and body

  4. Choose words that help instead of hurt

  5. Be brave and redo hurtful moments

  6. Be kind and let people try again

  7. Assume the best

We are looking forward to seeing familiar faces as well as meeting all of our new students and families. We do have a new face here on campus. Please help me welcome Ms. Jennifer Frey. Ms. Frey will be our Reed School Learning Specialist.

If you haven’t done so already, be sure to review the RUSD Elementary Family Handbook. Print, sign and return the Parent Acknowledgement form to your child’s teacher on or before August 22nd. This handbook is an invaluable resource. In it you should find answers to most of your questions.

If you are new to Reed, please plan to attend our New Families Orientation on Friday, August 19th from 8:30-9:30 in our multipurpose room. You will have the opportunity to learn about school happenings and meet several members of our Reed community.

Campus supervision begins each morning at 8:00 am. You are most welcome to walk your child on to the playground for the first two days of school. Beginning Monday, August 22nd please plan to drop your child off at carline or the front gate. Yard supervisors will be on site to welcome and monitor your child. In the event of tearful separations, please be ready to release your child to one of our caring staff. Tears generally subside within minutes! (Goodbyes are always hardest on the adult; I promise!)

On the first day of school, our gates will be open and you are welcome to walk your child directly to his/her classroom. Classrooms will open at 8:15am.  Please do not go to your classroom before that time, as teachers are busy preparing for this special day. (*Morning carline begins Friday August 19th.)

Be sure to send a note to your child’s teacher regarding your after school pick up plans. State whether your child will be: taking the bus, picked up at tables, picked up at carline, or picked up by the BTCCC staff. Please be sure to communicate your plan with your child.

Carline placards and key tags will be coming home on the first day. Please look for an envelope in your child’s backpack.

Choice Lunch service begins Monday the 22nd. For the first two days of school, please be sure to send your child with a healthy snack and lunch. *Please refrain from sending in any food or snacks containing nuts.

Please be reminded not to use the front circle to drop off or pick up your child. The circle is reserved for buses and emergency vehicles only. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

While we love our friendly four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted on or around the campus. This includes the sidewalk area in the front circle. Some of our students are either allergic and/or nervous around animals so please leave your pets at home.

Lastly, and perhaps the most exciting...teacher assignments! An email will be sent to all kindergarten families on Tuesday, August 16th and to all 1st and 2nd grade families on Wednesday, August 17th. I know I speak for the entire Reed School staff when I say how excited we are to begin the new year. See you all on Thursday, August 18th.

Students are to arrive at school between 8:00 and 8:25. The first bell rings at 8:25 and the students to line up by Room number on the blacktop. Teachers meet the students on the blacktop and accompany them to their classrooms. At 8:30 the second bell rings and classroom instruction begins. Students who arrive after the 8:30 bell are to report to the office for a tardy slip.
